Halfway between Milan and the Swiss frontier, Casa Morris is an extremely atmospheric former farmhouse just a short drive above sparkling Lake Orta, which is great for boating, swimming, shopping, and dining on its tiny island. This sub-alpine area is a favorite summer retreat and a jumping-off point for all of historic, wine-rich, gourmet-famous northern Italy.
Situated in a nature-protected area, the house has often been used by writers who cherish its seclusion and beauty. Walk one way through the forest to the Agonia River; another way up to a 400-year-old living monastery, or yet another way to the village espresso-and-wine cafe, and basic grocery store. Look for dozens of local trails, interesting expatriots tucked away in the hills, and bustling open-air street markets in nearby towns.
After visiting joyously for 20 years, being in our 70's we must now, regretfully, look to the future. We steadily improved both home and gardens. Complete with furnishings and equipment are: 3 floors, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 storage & attic rooms, skylights, stone & marble floors, working fireplaces, ancient pizza oven, washing machine, grapevines, gardens, and a rustic old well.
The property comprises two acres (0.8 hectares) in a grassy clearing with well-maintained gardens amid a chestnut, oak and beech forest. It is the last of four houses on a small paved road, just a few minutes' walk from the ancient village of Ameno (population 350).
Portions of the balconied, three-story farmhouse date back as far as 300 years. After decades of neglect, it was purchased in 1974 by Mrs. Morris, who sensitively restored it and brought it up to modern standards in compliance with Italian laws governing the restoration of historic properties. The 219 sq. meter, 3 bedroom house is constructed of thick stone walls providing excellent insulation, and its various roof sections are of red tile.
On the top floor are 2 bedrooms and one bathroom. The sunny master bedroom has a high, peaked ceiling with a skylight and old, rough-hewn beams. It comes furnished with a modern, floor-to-ceiling closet with drawers. The new bathroom has a shower and skylight. Adjacent to this is one small guest bedroom. Both bedrooms have access to balconies.
The middle floor comprises a beamed large guest bedroom, an ample bathtub-shower bathroom with a washing machine, and another room used alternatively as a fourth bedroom or workroom with wall-length closets. The hallway by the stairs accesses a small balcony.
The ground floor features a spacious, dark-beamed kitchen with full-sized gas stove, refrigerator, cupboards and traditional amenities including an old-fashioned pizza oven. The cozy dining room with fireplace attaches to a small cold-storage basement/wine cellar. On this level there is also the heater basement and third bathroom with shower.
The dining room leads into the large, sunny living room (the rebuilt former stable), with its efficient wood-burning fireplace and four glass-paned iron-frame doors opening wide onto the two gracious, slate-tiled patios.
The house floors are tiled either with luscious dark red tiles, or mixed-marble tiles.
The patios are ringed with a flower garden, two productive grape arbors, mature hedges, well-trimmed trees, and a picturesque old water well. Attached to the rear of the house is a fifteen foot (5 m) long storage room (repostilio) currently containing a two-person travel kayak (for the lake) and serve as storage for summer furniture.
The upper main access road gives into a fenced, paved parking area. Below that, a driveway curves downhill to two secondary, unpaved access roads through the forest.
Radiators throughout the home deliver central furnace heating fired by oil delivered locally. A municipal gas line is conveniently available at the edge of the property. The downhill septic system works efficiently. Cable television is available in this community.
Casa Morris is offered with appliances and kitchenware included, fully furnished and ready for housekeeping in vacation style.
