When travelling from Limassol to Platres it is worth leaving the main road to visit the pretty village of LANIA . On the road itself stands the ROYAL Oak , a tree which is reputed to be over 1,000 years old . Turning left off the Limassol - Platres road immediately before the Lania turnoff one comes to the village of MONAGRI . It was once celebrated for the now deserted monastery of ARCHANGELOS MICHAEL .
The hilly and mountainous areas of the countryside of Limassol are rich in vegetation. The main kinds are the Pinus Brutia, the Pinus Nigra and a kind of cypress tree known as "Juniperus oxycedrus" which grows at an altitude of about 1200 - 1500 meters. The plane trees and the aldez grow in the valleys of Troodos while a kind of oak tree named "latzia" and the "trimithia" grow on the slopes of the hills. The most frequent kinds are the wild roses, the thyme and the lentisk (bush).
Troodos National Forest Park is at the centre of the island and covers an area of 9337 hectares. The area is magical and suitable for a variety of activities such as hiking, skiing, mountain cycling, nature study and picnics.
