History
The history of the owners of the Residence Stenhus dates back as far as to the year 1360, although at this time the present house was yet to be built. The first time the Residence is mentioned in history is in the year 1532 and then once again at 1542, when the building was modestly called a stone warehouse (Stenhus). The master of the construction works was most probably the city council member (1511) and a future mayor (bürgermeister, 1525) Hindrick Smydt. From the year 1693 onwards the property belonged to the city council member Johan Stralborn and after that from 1729 to 1742 to the city secretary Bernhard Rudolf Hetling. Which one of them was the initiator of the reconstruction works is not known, but during these years the house received a picturesque painted ceiling and unique window shaping. Most of the reconstruction works at the 18th and 19th century were concentrated at the interior (doors, smithworks, etc), and in 1980 the house was planned to be rebuilt as an apartment house. At this time some part of the works were finished (such as new interior ceilings), but has not been completed until now.

Building
Constructed to make the most out of the available space, the Residence has an L-Shaped floor plan. Enclosed within a high yard wall, the building offers its residents a private inner garden, open from the northwest facade. Full of character, the archtecture is typical to the 15th-16th century Old Tallinn. With unique characteristic elements such as interesting doorways and corners, round portal basement door, the tiny square stairway lightwindow, quader-stones corners, etc. A very unique characteristic is the reconstructed framed high-baroque painted ceiling (reconstructed) with painted flower-buckets in four sides in the first floor Apartment #1.

Apartments
Composed of 4 apartments, each flat is located on two separate floor levels. The original size and shape of each room has been maintained, and all precious historical details have been renovated and exposed. The interior design and materials give the impression of prestige and high quality. Each flat is equipped with kitchen, sauna bathroom, dining room with fireplace, parquet floors, and stone walls. A unique bonus : parking is also included in the interior courtyard, which is very unusual for Tallinn, which is usually reserved for pedestrians.
