"Tradewinds was built by an American contractor to US specifications. Everything actually works here. It is a short walk to the beach and shopping but quiet and secure. Sunsets over the pool garden from the terrace are really nice. There is an eclectic mix or residents at Tradewinds: Germans, Italians, French, Swiss, Dominican executives and many N. Americans. You will not find a better built and managed complex with a better group of residents than Tradewinds. The terrace is nice for relaxation, dining and snoozing in the hammock. The pool and deck are large and very well maintained by an excellent maintenance staff. The mountains are just behind us. There is always a seabreeze and the smell of flowers in bloom. The fresh local produce, fish and fruits are worth the trip and the small kitchen is equipped to take full advantage of the delicacies that await you here."

ABOUT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND PUERTO PLATA
Located about 80 miles west of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic covers the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, consisting of nearly 49,000 square miles. Home to 8 million people, its largely Spanish-speaking residents call it 'Republica Dominicana'. English, German, and French are also spoken in its tourist regions. The country's climate is tropical and breezy, and nearly constant year-round. Average daytime temperatures are 78 F, dropping to the low 70's in the evenings. Ideal weather, sun, and sandy beaches attract tourists.
HISTORY
Originally home to one million native Indians, the Dominican Republic today enjoys a blend of Taino Indians, Spanish, and African peoples. Santo Domingo, known as the 'first city of America', was established in the early-1500's by European settlers, led by Christopher Columbus. The country's primary industries are tourism, sugar processing, and mining. The national currency of the Dominican Republic is the 'peso', which floats against other currencies, including the US Dollar.
The Dominican Republic's diverse landscape is fringed with endless sandy beaches along its north and east coasts. Its interior is mountainous, with many rivers and tropical forests. Pico Duarte, at 3175 meters, is the Caribbean Antilles' highest mountain peak. Puerto Plata and the 75-mile Amber Coast (northern coastline) boast most of the finest beaches and coral reefs in the Dominican Republic, stunningly bordered by majestic mountains. You'll find botanical gardens, casinos, golf courses, night spots, restaurants, and shops. Its beaches are mostly quiet and palm-fringed, with clear waters to delight watersports enthusiasts. Visitors to the town of Puerto Plata will enjoy its Victorian architecture, cable car rides up 2565-foot Mount Isabel de Torres, and its historic artifacts. Puerto Plata's Fort of San Felipe, originally built to repel French and English pirates, now serves as a museum of the city's past.
