History
An unexpected Eighteenth Century Palace just Seven Kilometers from Granada. Number one in the square at Viznar and joined to the village Parish Church. Its close proximity to the Church, perfect for its original occupant. Archbishop Don Juan Manuel Moscos y Peralta. Indeed his seal still adorns the locks of many doors in the main salons.
The Palace is renowned for the beauty of its gardens. Two gardens, one North the other South. The main body of the building separates the two gardens. The North Garden is cool and shady, the South Garden bright with sunshine.
The arched galleries on the façade in the North garden are adorned with Fresco’s. Original works of art representing scenes from Don Quixote. The colours are vibrant, and look closely to see additions made by less reputable artists. Graffiti which adds to the history of this place.
The Palace and the Gardens are in a Classic Italian Style, very different from the Granada landscape, which is spread at the feet of the Palace in the South garden. The Italian and French influences from the XVIII Century, its history and quiet location make this property unique. Unimaginable to find such a treasure hiding behind magnificent doors in the heart of the village square.
From this main entrance way step inside a wide hallway. This hallway has two stone epitaphs mounted high on the wall. One to depict the inception of the Palace by the Archbishop, and the other to show the part the palace played in the Spanish Civil War. It was close by to the Village of Viznar that the acclaimed Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca met his tragic end.
From this hallway that defines the history of the Palace rises a monumental staircase leading up to the palace. Also here the access route to the North Garden, which is entered, according to Arab Tradition by a small side gate. The first floor originally incorporated the Oratory and the Archbishops Chapel, along with a series of rooms dedicated to receptions.
On the ground floor were the prelate’s quarters and those of his relatives; here was the hub of the palace, dedicated to everyday life.
Gardens
From the main entrance proceed into the North Garden. A magnificent fountain made from white marble sits directly in the center of a watery pathway. Impressive in stature, a centerpiece amongst box hedges and vast ancient trees. The atmosphere here is audible.
A coolness and secluded feeling, enveloped by the incredible arched galleries of the Palace, running fully across its length.
Through a hallway lit by light refracted through coloured glass, the South Garden is visible.
Across a threshold revealing the date the palace was created, raised in cobbled stone. In this garden the Sun warms the face, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. A trio of fountains runs parallel to the rear façade, and the flowers are rich in colour. The boxed hedges again encase the trees as they rise to incredible heights. A feature of this Garden is the two-century-old Magnolia tree, and the views across to the Sierra Elvira. A swimming pool lies shaded and undiscovered behind ancient doors, a bath in Roman Style.
The Palace
It is difficult to describe the interior of the palace. The current arrangements have evolved during the last half-century as one family with many generations made this their permanent home.
The upper floor is a veritable maze of interconnecting salons and suites of rooms. The ceilings, vast and ornate, the walls adorned with original works of Art. As the main salons have all been left in tact, the rest of the upper floors have been divided into apartments, each being a suite of rooms each with its own function.
Running parallel to the salons a long hallway with adjoining rooms. From this hallway one can access directly the long upper gallery decorated with Fresco’s and elevated above the North Garden. This part of the house was damaged by fire and has undergone certain changes. However, in the main the house is intact and decorated in the original fashion.
The interior of the Palace is eclectic. Furniture from distinct eras and styles have slowly been introduced. Now hidden under dustsheets this gives the Palace a fairytale feeling, an atmosphere of by-gone days and times when such places existed.
The ground floor rooms can be entered from the service quarters, which connect with the upstairs rooms. They can also be entered from the second main hallway, which separates North and South gardens. Here they are many rooms and bathrooms in need of some attention. A large kitchen with vast chimneypiece and stairs that access to the upper floor.
An imposing tower rises above the North and South Gardens and is dominant above the rooftops of the palace. From here one can see a 360º view. From the olive trees to the Sierra Elvira in the distance and the adjacent bell tower of the adjoining church. The inner walls of the tower also finished in fine detail again decorated with fresco’s. Four windows open to the four main points of the compass.
This part of the palace has been used to host functions in the grounds and gardens. The views from the South garden and intimacy of the North Garden make this a wonderful setting for private entertaining in a unique location.
Additional Information
Planning permission has already been granted to extend the existing 2,500m2 palace to 5,000m2. The palace however must maintain its original facades and historic gardens. However there are some parts of the palace that may be re-built.
With the extension of the build size to 5,000m2 this leaves plenty of space to further the gardens and add a swimming pool and tennis court. Currently the remainder of the plot not covered by the main house and gardens is cultivated as a kitchen garden, and contains many fruit trees. A vast plateau has been used for outside functions where the views to the Sierra Elvira and Granada countryside are impressive.
The building of an access road to the rear of the property and building of garaging/car parking facilities is also permissible.
