About the Building.......
Benalcazar 1058 was built in 1954 in the modernist / rationalist style by renowned Ecuadorian architect Alfonso Calderón Moreno as a residential property for his family. The property is registered and featured in the Quito Museum of Architecture, and appears in the book Arquitectura de Quito 1915-1985 (page 51), published in 2004 by the same Museum.
The property, well-located in the Historic Center of Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site widely acknowledged to be the largest and best preserved colonial center in Latin America, sits within walking distance of Quito’s principal tourist attractions. Independence Square, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the presidential palace, the Church of San Francisco, the Quito City Museum and the Church of the Company of Jesus are all located just a few blocks from Benalcazar 1058, as are countless restaurants, hotels, shops, and other points of interest.
After years of neglect, the property was rescued in 2004 by private investors. In 2005, celebrated Ecuadorian architect Luis López López was selected to carry out a contemporary intervention of the property with the remit of maintaining the building’s period style and features while creating a residential space attuned to contemporary lifestyle demands. A specialist in the restoration of Colonial and Republican buildings in the Historic Center of Quito, and a key contributor behind the renovation of the Quito City Museum and the Quito Museum of Architecture, as well as the design and construction of the Casa Olmedo 954 and Portón de Benalcazar loft complexes, amongst other important architectural works in the Historic Center, Architect López has brought to this project a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Upon completion in July 2006, the building will feature five apartments on three floors (i.e. Ground Floor, 1st Floor and 2nd Floor) ranging in area from 60 m² to 160 m², as well as a street-facing commercial space measuring 50 m² in area, and a private garage accommodating five cars. The restoration and contemporary intervention of Benalcazar 1058 is being conducted by Architect López and his team with the utmost care, with particular attention being given to exceeding the highest standards of anti-seismic construction and other safety requirements.
